The role that women play in the farming industries of Africa and Asia will be highlighted as part of an awareness raising campaign.
International Development Enterprises (iDE) UK is urging people across the UK to get involved in its first Tackling Poverty Through Rural Enterprises Awareness Week from April 30 to May 6.
The London-based charity plans to run awareness weeks every year to raise the profile of simple solutions to reducing poverty among the rural poor in Africa and Asia. Each year there will be a specific focus to tackling poverty through rural enterprise.
This year, the focus is on creating self-supporting women entrepreneurs in Africa and Asia by helping them access the right technologies and services which will in turn enable them to run businesses in farming.
Chief executive of iDE UK, Lewis Temple, said: "Although women do much of the work, they often lack the resources available to men. Given equal access to resources and control over their outputs, women farmers are as productive as male farmers. They are also more likely than their male counterparts to use their increased income to pay for children's food, education and health care."
The charity is urging people to get in touch to request its new awareness raising poster to display locally. They also want volunteers to get in touch to do one of their suggested fundraising activities between April 30 and May 6.
