Meeting the news needs of local communities
In 2010 research commissioned by Media Trust into meeting the news needs of local communities has revealed the decline of local newspapers has left many people feeling disempowered, unheard and irrelevant and may significantly hinder the emergence of the much debated 'Big Society'. The report, written on behalf of Media Trust by Professor Natalie Fenton and her team at Goldsmiths Media Research Centre, highlights the inextricable link between a vibrant local media and proper accountability and democracy.
