Real to Reel Media was setup around 18 months ago by James Lockey and Ian Byatt with a strong belief in empowering the marginalised and disadvantaged members of the community through mixed media projects, predominantly film and music.
Although we have a lot of experience in working with various agencies and groups in Doncaster, most of what Real to Reel delivers is centred on working with young people.
The award winning film
The Netherhall Area film was made with a group of young people from the Netherhall area in Doncaster, and was delivered in partnership with the Netherhall Area CIC and was funded by Doncaster NDC.
The aim was to give them a voice to tell the powers that be what they think of the area in which they live, what they like, what they don’t like and what they would like to change for the better.
We worked with the group for a week and had a great time making the film.
Through all the work we do we make sure that the young people are in control and have a say throughout the process. Our role was simply to facilitate and give them hands on experience of filmmaking. They took on roles such as script writer, camera operator, sound person, photographer etc.
The film will be shown to local councillors who have the power to make the changes the young people addressed in the film.
We feel that it is a great way of engaging young people in a positive activity and also a great way of giving young people a voice that often gets lost in a lot of negative press.
Real to Reel media is still in its early days and we are looking forward to developing future projects and partnerships with other groups and individuals.
We are really pleased to have received an award from the Media Trust in such an early stage of our development as it shows that we on the right path to success and that the work we are doing is having an impact.
The award will help towards our current aim in securing dedicated premises for Real to Reel Media so that we can continue to deliver high quality media projects in Doncaster.
