Working with Big Up Films, a non-profit organisation that runs filmmaking and drama workshops in the community, a group of young people from Fenwick Estate have created a project called This is My Story, made up of a series of short films about life in the neighbourhood and the issues that are important to them.
During the project the young people learnt skills such as script writing, production management, directing, editing and camera techniques. One young participant, Jermaine Sawyers, 15 said: 'It's time to say what you think. Whether it is to your parents, teachers or bosses. People like Nelson Mandela and Rosa Parks, they said what they thought and it got them somewhere. Say what you think.'
Big Up Films also works with community groups across London, helping to encourage pride and cohesion within communities, as well as engaging with councillors, local Mayors and press.
Media Trust's Director of Marketing and Communications Services, Gavin Sheppard, says: 'We know that there is a wealth of great digital media work already going on in the community, but we were especially impressed with the way Big Up Films encourages young people to share their ideas and create projects based on real life experiences.'
