Morley Way Community Centre

About the Community:

Morley Way Community Centre is a volunteer led St Helen's- based centre that supports older people on a sheltered housing estate. They have a community room where they meet and take part in activities. They also encourage older people outside the scheme to get involved in activities to improve their mental and physical wellbeing.

What they plan to do with Media Trust’s support:

The group feels isolated from the outside world, and feels that IT skills would allow them to reach out to the wider community. They intend to use the grant to pay for training by an IT Tutor. They have already been donated some computers, and this will allow for the community to get the most out of them.

What they hope to achieve with the project:

By developing IT skills and by using the internet they can access social networking sites and online communities, reducing their isolation and allowing them to do things online such as, vote, contact the local council, order prescriptions and get involved in local issues as well as setting up a blog about the centre, to share ideas and invite other groups to activities at the centre.

Rose lives in sheltered accommodation in St Helen's and has been attending weekly classes on how to use the internet as part of Media Trust's Community Voices project
