The Spending Challenge is a new initiative from HM Treasury that aims to give the public a voice in the debate on reducing government spending.
The first phase of the Challenge was limited to those working in the public sector, to get their professional insights on everything from how to cut back on wasteful spending to radical changes in the way services are provided.
Ideas ranged from how money and the environment can be saved by cutting back on publications and printing, to how new incentives within the public sector could stop unnecessary spending of budgets at year end in a “spend it or lose it” culture. Many of these ideas are challenging of Government policy, but they have committed to considering every one with the best ones taken forward.
The next phase of the Spending Challenge is now open to everyone to share their ideas as tax payers and users of services. This phase is different to the last, they not only want your ideas, but also want your help in identifying the best ones to take forward.
In addition Ministers will be hosting seminars and travelling up and down the country to hear opinions and ideas first hand. These will be shaped by the comments and suggestions made in the Spending Challenge, so if you have an idea or you want to show your support for one of the existing ideas being put forward... don’t hesitate.
